Secret Room 3
He rang the doorbell, and Misty answered it. She smiled and invited him in. He came inside, but as he was closing the door, he saw a black limousine pull up in front of his house. He went to the window and looked out, seeing three big men get out. Two of them escorted Cindy up the stairs to the door.
“What is it?” asked Misty, peering out right next to him. “Hey, there’s someone at your house!”
“I know. That’s what I’m looking at.” he told her. “I don’t recognize them. I don’t know anyone who rides around in limousines.”
They watched as a big, fat man got out of the back when the third gorilla opened it for him, then they went up to the door and rang the bell. He rang it several more times, but there was no answer, so the biggest guy smashed it open. All five of them went in.
“I’m going to use your phone, okay?” he said. “On second thought, I’d like you to call the police and report what you just saw, okay?”
Misty nodded, then went to the phone and dialed the station number from the emergency list next to the phone. She told them what she had seen, four big men and a woman breaking into her neighbor’s house, and they told her that they would send someone right over.
She hung up the phone and looked at Mike, smiling.
“Guess what? Mom gave us permission to go all the way, as soon as she gets home from work. She said she wants to be there when we do it, but I’m not sure I can wait that long.”
“Well, the police are going to come here after they check out my house, because this is where the call originated from.” he told her. “We should wait at least until they leave.”
“Yeah, I guess you’re right.” she said. “But I want you as soon as they’re gone. “I’m still horny from sucking it this morning!”
Five minutes later, two cruisers showed up in front of his house. Four cops got out and went up onto the porch. They saw the busted front door and all four got their guns out, taking cover on either side of the door. Two of them went down the steps and disappeared into the back yard, and the other two went into the house a moment later.
Misty snuggled up to him, and he put an arm around her waist. She moved it up to her breast, and he could tell the she wasn’t wearing a bra under her T-shirt.
“Oh, God, I love the feel of your tits.” he said, giving it a little squeeze. “So firm, and they’re just the right size, too.”
“And I love the way it feels when you touch them.” she said, grinding her ass into his crotch.
“Oh, Misty, don’t do that! The cops will be here any minute, and I don’t want to talk to them with a hard on!” Misty giggled, but then she caught her breath as they heard shots being exchanged in his house.
“Oh, shit!” he said, letting her go. He went over to the phone and hit the redial button, then handed the phone to Misty again.
“Hello? My name is Misty Walker, and I live at 2024 Walnut Lane. I just called a few minutes ago and reported a break-in, and now I’m hearing gunfire from there.” She paused a minute. “Yes, sir, four policemen went in, and nobody has come out yet. There were a lot of gunshots, about twenty or so, I think. Maybe you better send some more men over.” She paused again, listening.
“Yes, sir, they’re at 1101 Walnut, about a block from here. There’s two police cars out front, and a limo.” She listened again. “The license plate of the limo is 2943 A M. Ohio, sir. Yes, I’m sure, I can see it clearly from here. It’s a big Cadillac limousine, with black windows. Five people got out of it, four big men, and a woman. They all went into my neighbor’s house, and nobody has come out yet.”
She waited a moment, then turned her head and looked at Mike.
“I’m on hold.” she said. “They’re trying to contact the other officers.”
While they were waiting, three more police cars showed up, and all three had four men in them. They clustered on the lawn for a moment, then spread out around the house. A few minutes later, the S.W.A.T. van showed up, and about twenty officers dressed all in black got out, wearing bulletproof vests and helmets. They went up the steps and swarmed into the house, carrying shotguns and automatic rifles.
“Oh, man, they’re going to screw up my beautiful house!” Mike said. “I bet there’s bullet holes all over the place already!” More police and ambulances were showing up, two fire trucks and another squad of S.W.A.T.
“Oh, Mike, where’s little Pete? I hope he’s not in there!” Misty said, concerned. “No, wait, he’s in school, isn’t he?”
“Yes, but his bus should be coming in about half an hour.” said Mike. “I hope all this is over with by then.”
“What if it isn’t?” Misty asked, worried. “I mean, they wouldn’t let him off the bus into the middle of a firefight, would they?”
“No way.” Mike told her. “The cops wouldn’t even let the bus get onto this street! I’ll probably have to go pick him up at school.”
Another cop car pulled up in front of the Walker’s house. One cop got out and came up the walk, then rang the bell. Misty answered it, with Mike right behind her.
“Hello, officer, please, come in.” Misty said.
“Hello, officer, I’m Mike Ménage.” said Mike, introducing himself. “That’s my house up the street, there.”
“It is!?” said the cop. “I’m Officer Velasquez of the Metro police. Maybe you could tell me how all this mess up the street got started?”
“Well, earlier today, my wife showed up and wanted to come in; no, maybe I should go back a little further than that. My wife left me two months ago, and this morning she came back to get some of her things. A month after she left, I was angry and I gave all her things to Goodwill, and I told her so. She wanted to come in the house, but I refused to let her.” Mike stopped and looked at the officer.
“Is that it? That’s your story?” he asked. “That doesn’t explain anything!” he said.
“No, I’m not done.” Mike told him. “I just thought I’d stop so you could ask any questions you might have.”
“Okay, why wouldn’t you let her in?” he asked.
“Because, it’s not her house.” Mike answered. “It was mine before we married, and there’s a prenup that states all prior property belongs to the original party and does not become marital property.” he explained. “I didn’t want to continue our marriage, and the best way, I felt, would be a clean break.”
“Okay, go on.” said the cop. “Tell me the rest.”
“About an hour later, she came back with two men in police uniform, but they refused to show me their ID, so I refused to let them into my home. They pushed their way inside, and forced me into my basement at gunpoint.
“They were searching for a hidden room down there; apparently my wife had told them about one.”
“Is there one?” asked the cop.
“As a matter of fact, there is.” Mike told him. “My father built a safe room years ago, back in the fifties, as a bomb shelter. The men threatened my wife with the guns until I showed it to them.
“They were so eager to see it, one of them let his attention slip, and Cindy grabbed his gun and shot them both. I then came over here to collect my thoughts before reporting it, but then the limo showed up, so I had Misty call the police. That’s when we heard all the gunshots, so she called them again. Can you tell me if everyone is okay in there?”
“Well, everyone is not okay.” said Officer Velasquez. “I’m afraid that in addition to the two men that your wife shot, there are three officers dead, plus the four men you saw entering your house, and your wife Cindy is in critical condition, and not expected to last the night. She was shot twice in the belly, cut up pretty badly, and there are… pieces missing.”
“Oh, my God, oh my God.” Mike moaned. “What did they do to her?”
“It looks like she was tortured for information” said Velasquez. “Her fingernails were pulled, and they used a knife to cut her up. She’s lost a lot of blood, and even if she pulls through, she isn’t… whole anymore.”
“W-what do you mean?” Mike asked, paling. “Not whole?” Velasquez looked at Misty uneasily, not wanting to say more in front of a child.
“Could we speak alone?” he asked. “It’s sort of gruesome.”
“Sure.” Misty said. “I’ll just go up to my room and let you two alone.” When she had gone, officer Velasquez cleared his throat, unsure how to tell this man that his wife had been mutilated.
“Uh, well, sir, they cut off both her nipples, and marked up her face.” he said. “They took her nose off, and both her ears. The tendons in her left knee have all been cut, as well as her Achilles’ tendon in her right heel. She be in a wheelchair for the rest of her life, assuming she lives.”
Mike looked distressed, shaking his head with tears brimming.
“None of that is life-threatening.” he said. “I mean, it’s serious, but people have lived through worse.”
“True, but she was also shot twice in the stomach at close range.” Velasquez told him.
“Can I see her?” Mike asked. “Which hospital has she been taken to?”
“She’s en route to St. Mary’s.” said Velasquez. “However, there’s some questions I have for you first.”
“Okay, but let’s get it over with as quickly as possible. I want to be with my wife. She may have left me, but I never wished anything like this on her.” Mike said, the tears now spilling down his face.
“Have you ever heard of Sal Mineo?” he asked Mike, studying his face carefully. “Tell me the truth!”
“Sure, I have.” said Mike. “Who hasn’t? He’s the local crime lord.”
“Have you ever had any dealings with him?”
“Hell, no.” said Mike. “Once you get tangled up with people like that… Wait a minute! Are you saying that it was Mineo’s people in my house?” Mike said in an anguished voice. “Those gangsters did this to my Cindy?”
Velasquez nodded. “Any idea what the info they tortured her for was?” Mike shook his head, getting an angry look on his face.
“No clue.” he said. “Look, Officer, I probably shouldn’t say this, but if you people don’t shut Mineo down, I’m going to.”
“Hey, Mr. Ménage, don’t say things like that! You have no idea what these men are like. Besides, you don’t need to. Mineo himself was one of the men killed in your house today.”
“Good.” said Mike grimly. “Saves me a lot of trouble.”
“Trouble like that you don’t need.” Velasquez nodded. “You got plenty of that already, wouldn’t you agree?”
“Sure do.” Mike said. “I got a shot-up house, and a cut-up wife. Excuse me, Officer, but I’m going to the hospital to see her.”
“I’ll drive you there, okay? I’m afraid your car has been impounded as part of the crime scene.”
“No, because if it’s true that Mineo is involved, I think it might be safer for me if I’m not seen associating with the police. You may have gotten him, but he’s got a lot of people still out there, right? Somebody is bound to take over the organization.” Velasquez looked at him askance.
“Are you sure you haven’t had any dealings with them? You sure know a lot about how they think.”
“Hey, I watch the Soprano’s.” he said. “Are these guys any different?”
Velasquez chuckled. “No, I guess not.” he said. “Okay, we’ll want you to come downtown to make a formal statement, but from what you told me, you’ll be okay. “It’s well known that Mineo had an obsession for hidden rooms. The fact that you had one tells us why he showed up at your house personally.”
“Okay, but I have a question of my own.” Mike said. “How did Cindy get involved with Mineo in the first place?” Velasquez looked uncomfortable, looking at the floor.
“Well, it seems she was a prostitute for him.” he said. “About six weeks ago, she was caught up in a sting we did on one of his motels.”
“Oh, God, I never should have let her go.” Mike said, new tears forming.
“Uh, don’t get too worked up. She’s had two separate charges in the last six years.” Velasquez told him. “This wasn’t a one-time thing for her, I’m afraid. She’s been doing this for a while.”
“Oh shit, oh, my God.” Mike moaned. “She was out hooking?” Mike looked shocked, and sat down in a chair, holding his head in his hands. “I’d like to be alone, please.” he said. “This is all such a shock!”
“Sure, but are you staying here for the now? You can’t go home, I’m afraid. It’s cordoned off as a crime scene, and will be until Forensics is finished doing their thing. A few days, at most, probably. We’ll be in touch, so don’t leave town.”
“No, no, I won’t go anywhere.” he said. “You have my complete cooperation.” he told them.
“Okay, Mr. Ménage, we’ll be in touch.” Officer Velasquez left.
